Pay-per-click is a model of Internet marketing in which advertisers pay a fee each time one of their adverts is clicked. The higher the bid on each keyword, the further up the rankings your ad will appear. Each category has a different rate per click, the more websites then the more they cost. IE if you are a plumber in London it will be very expensive, but if you are a brain surgeon in the Orkney's then it will be a lot cheaper to appear at the top.
